Centor hosts Brisbane Lord Mayor plan announcement

10 August 2011 Centor yesterday hosted the Lord Mayor’s announcement of a new steering committee to help develop Brisbane Economic Development Plan for 2011-2016. The plan, due out in November this year, is designed to market Brisbane to the world, driving investment and jobs into the city through developing Brisbane’s local business environment. Consisting of key industry leaders, the steering committee will make recommendations to local council on where investment is best allocated such as infrastructure and skills training, to grow and develop Brisbane businesses. Centor Managing Director Nigel Spork said the steering committee was an exciting new development for Brisbane’s economic growth. “Centor has proudly been a Brisbane-based company since 1951. It’s great to see our local government supporting this city’s talented businesses by giving us a chance to be involved in the future economic planning of Brisbane. “Brisbane provides businesses with fantastic opportunities to grow and prosper. We have expanded our operations over the last six years into four countries and now export to 39 countries worldwide.” He said while Centor has grown into a successful global company, he still considers Brisbane to be the foundation of Centor’s achievements. “We have won state, national and international awards, but we feel particularly honoured to have our efforts recognised in the Lord Mayor’s Awards as most of our innovation and growth happens right here in Brisbane,” Mr Spork said. Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said he wanted greater involvement from local business on the economic planning of Brisbane to position the city as a destination for business, investment and tourism, particularly after recent hard times. “I want to ensure that Council is doing whatever we can to help local businesses survive these tough economic times and to focus on creating a more prosperous Brisbane to grow our strong economy,” he said. Brisbane Marketing’s Chairman Ian Klug will head the steering committee with around eight key industry leaders to be made members of the committee. “I have asked Ian Klug and his Steering Committee to engage with industry and local businesses to complete an update of Council’s Brisbane Economic Development Plan before the end of this year. “This updated plan will ensure Brisbane is making the most of its place as the gateway to Queensland and helping to grow our $114 billion economy. “The people of Brisbane and their businesses have shown great resilience and determination to recover from the global financial crisis and the January floods.
