Centor walks to fight poverty
|
Centor employees from around the world have teamed up to fight poverty by walking 100km in Brisbane’s first Oxfam Trailwalker over the weekend. On Friday 17 June, 24 Centor walkers set-out from Mount Glorious with the incredible challenge of walking all the way to Mount Coot-tha in teams of four in under 48 hours. Warnings of Brisbane’s trail being particularly tough became a reality when blisters and swollen joints caused 27% of the 1,132 participants to retire from the event. However, with only 44% of teams finishing with all four members, Centor was particularly proud to have five whole teams finish the event, losing only one team member to blisters. Trailwalker helps Oxfam raise money to fight poverty in developing countries and Centor is thrilled to have raised nearly $27,000 for Oxfam. Centor employees from the United Kingdom, the United States, China and Australia have spent over six months training and fundraising for Trailwalker. Centor Managing Director Nigel Spork said he was proud of how Centor walkers stood up to the challenge. “There is no denying Brisbane’s Trailwalker was extremely tough but to have 23 walkers finish the 100km is exceptional,” Mr Spork said. “Centor is honoured to have been given the opportunity to contribute back to our global community and raising over $26,500 for Oxfam is a great effort,” Mr Spork said. In total, Oxfam has raised nearly $900,000 from the Brisbane event with fundraising continuing until 19 July.
