Save on your power bill with new bi-folds for renovators

30 March 2010 Electricity price hikes and heat waves over summer have many people trying to think of new ways to keep cool without their energy bills soaring. The Australian Government Your Home website says passive cooling has the lowest environmental impact and is the cheapest way to keep cool in the heat. Improved natural ventilation with windows and doors that open fully to catch breezes is one of their recommended methods. Centor, the Australian company that invented the modern exterior bi-fold, has just released an innovation in folding doors that will help even more people open up their homes and turn off their air-conditioners. Any home can have bi-folds as the new system can be retrofitted in any opening without structural adjustments. Bi-folds provide double the natural ventilation compared to an equivalent sliding door, allowing homeowners with bi-folds installed to use their air-conditioners less. “Our new bi-fold system can be retro-fitted into any doorway, including openings currently fitted with sliding doors, because no overhead structural beam is required,” Centor managing director Nigel Spork said. “No structural adjustments are required because the new system transfers the door weight to rollers in a track in the floor. This means bi-folds are now a cost-effective option for renovations, so keeping your home cool without turning on the air-conditioner is a possibility for even more people. “This system is as delightful to use as our original top-hung systems, and can be paired with our award-winning retractable screen and blind system,” Mr Spork said. Centor’s new system allows for openings up to an impressive 11.4 m wide and 2.4 m tall (27.3 m2).
