Centor spoke with builder and homeowner Kris Johnson about using the Centor A6 internal sliding system in his home.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family. My partner Cassandra and I have just finished our fifth house, with each house becoming a little more complex in design and finish. We have started importing custom-made furniture for our projects to give them that completed feeling. In the end, everything is made to fit and suit a particular space.
When you started looking into building your home, what was your dream for it? From the start we wanted a home with a Southeast Asian feel. Being on a steep sloping block achieving the open feeling wasn't easy, but using large format doors overcame this problem. We have ended up with quite a large open terrace considering the slope of the land and when all doors are open during summer it's the perfect space to relax with a few beers.
Were there any challenges in trying to achieve your vision for your home? Site conditions dictated most of the design process, and tight access meant a few larger items initially specified need to be changed during construction.
Do you find the Centor hardware easy to use? Most of the Centor hardware is very honest and simple; this lends itself to easy operation, maintenance and installation.
You used Centor A6 sliding hardware in your home. Why did you choose this? Most of the sliding doors being used were solid teak wood. Being extremely heavy meant we needed strong hardware, and the A6 matched both our mechanical and aesthetic needs. There are a lot of raw materials used throughout the house and the A6 complements these perfectly.
Have you found the A6 system helped achieve a good practical and design outcome in your home? Practically, the A6 is amazing; it almost slides too easily considering the weight of the doors. Being able to hang such large doors also gave us considerable storage, which wouldn't have been able to be utilized had the doors been smaller.
You're a builder and have used Centor hardware in other projects. How have you found using Centor hardware? It seems most of our glazing contractors use Centor hardware and we have never had any problems with any of the locks or other hardware. In particular the router attachment designed for use with the dropbolts makes installation about as easy as it gets.
